Friends of Aphasia

Health & Human Services

Friends of Aphasia is a Tucson based nonprofit supporting adults with aphasia through conversation, language, and cognitive activities in a group setting. Our groups focus on building communication skills, confidence, and meaningful social connection in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

We offer in-person aphasia groups on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. at our office in midtown Tucson. Each day includes a mix of large group activities and small conversation groups. Small groups typically include up to six members and two volunteers, while large group activities may include games, member presentations, local musicians, or guest speakers.

We also host virtual aphasia groups via Zoom on Wednesdays from 1:30–3:00 p.m., and we are currently seeking volunteers to help facilitate these sessions.

Our programming runs in 12-week semesters, with short breaks in between. Volunteers are ideally able to commit for the length of a semester.

Friends of Aphasia is not a support group. While community is a meaningful part of our program, our groups are specifically designed to help people with aphasia practice and improve communication skills alongside peers who are understanding and encouraging.

Volunteer Expectations & Opportunities

We are looking for volunteers who are patient, empathetic, and strong communicators, and who are open to learning and receiving guidance from our clinical staff.

Opportunities include:

  • Facilitating in-person groups on Mondays and/or Wednesdays (9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.) *We are especially in need of consistent Wednesday volunteers

  • Assisting with virtual Zoom groups on Wednesdays (1:30–3:00pm MST)

  • Supporting administrative tasks and community outreach

Volunteers must be 18 or older to work directly with members (other opportunities may be available for ages 16+). A weekly Zoom volunteer meeting on Thursdays from 9:00–10:00 a.m. is part of the role.

Our volunteers are essential to our work, and we are grateful for your interest in being part of the Friends of Aphasia community.
