Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Awards Foundation for Senior Living $100,000 to Support Healthy Aging in Arizona

PHOENIX, AZ (September 4, 2024) — The Foundation for Senior Living (FSL) is proud to announce that it has received a $100,000 grant from Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. This generous contribution will directly support FSL’s efforts to provide comprehensive housing solutions to help Arizona seniors age with confidence amidst the state’s growing eviction crisis.

In Maricopa County, evictions have surged by 21% in 2024, following more than 83,000 eviction filings in 2023. For Arizona's aging population, housing stability is critical. FSL remains committed to addressing this urgent issue by providing not only housing with affordable rents but also essential onsite services to ensure seniors can age with confidence and dignity.

“We are deeply grateful to the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust for this investment in our mission,” said Tami Bohannon, president and CEO of FSL. “With evictions rising at an alarming rate, this grant strengthens our ability to keep seniors housed via onsite resident service coordinators who play a vital role in ensuring that seniors can age in place, stay connected to the community, and access the resources they need.”

FSL’s resident service coordinators help seniors maintain independence by offering support that goes beyond housing. From facilitating food box and meal deliveries, transportation to the grocery store and doctor’s appointments, onsite mobile banking courtesy of PNC Bank, FSL ensures that residents have the resources to age with confidence.

Older adults are one of the six core program areas of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, inspired by Virginia Piper’s passion for improving senior services. As a founding member of the League Interested in Senior Adults (LISA), Piper helped provide fundraising support for FSL in the 1980’s. Her legacy continues through Piper Trust’s support of Maricopa County nonprofits that work to strengthen communities and foster long-term well-being for people.

“Older adults, often on limited incomes, already struggle with tragic decisions between healthcare and food—rising evictions bring their challenges to an even more tragic level,” said Steve Zabilski, president and CEO of Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust. “Piper Trust takes its lead from Virginia Piper who emphasized the importance of society’s support for its most vulnerable populations. We are continually grateful for the care and work that FSL provides to our older adult neighbors.”

This grant will empower FSL to meet the growing needs of Arizona’s senior population, safeguarding independence for the residents of their 310 units of affordable housing across Maricopa County.
