The Patagonia Regional Times - Democracy Needs Local News - Keeping our communities informed through local journalism.
Organization Overview:
The Patagonia Regional Times (PRT) is a nonprofit newspaper serving eastern Santa Cruz County, Arizona, since 2008. Our mission is to inform and connect our community through the voices of local and talented citizen journalists who bring our readers the stories you can’t find anywhere else. We tell the stories of our neighbors—covering news, local government, arts, events, school sports, and breaking news alerts—while providing a platform for local nonprofits, small businesses, and so much more.
At the PRT, we believe in the importance of community news and know that true democracy needs local news. By telling the stories that shape our community and keep us connected at no cost to our readers, we are building a platform of trust and reliability that our community has come to rely on.
Commitment to the Arts, Culture, and Humanities:
The PRT is key in celebrating arts, culture, and humanities by covering stories highlighting local history, architecture, and community traditions. This January, for example, we feature the launch of a youth cycling program, a tribute to regional restoration efforts through literature, and profiles on local contributors to our area’s cultural and artistic landscape. Through these features, PRT preserves and promotes the region's rich heritage and fosters a more profound sense of identity and connection among residents.
Current Campaigns and Projects:
1. Monthly Local History Features: Highlighting stories about influential families, historic architecture, and the geological wonders that define our community.
2. Student Sports Coverage: Celebrating achievements of local student-athletes while fostering pride and community spirit.
3. SMS Emergency Alert Broadcasting System: This is a major initiative launching this year to deliver real-time, life-saving news during wildfires, weather emergencies, and road closures, ensuring the safety and well-being of our rural communities.
Upcoming Initiatives:
Expanded Local Government Coverage: The PRT is committed to informing the community about local government decisions, monitoring new and incumbent elected officials, covering Board of Supervisors meetings, and reporting on issues affecting our communities. We provide the “when and where” information encouraging community members to attend meetings, stay informed, and actively participate in shaping the region’s future.
Expanded Arts and Culture Series: Building on our commitment to arts and humanities, we plan to feature more local artists and cultural events in 2025.
The PRT is more than a newspaper—it’s a bridge connecting our community's past, present, and future. By preserving local stories, fostering civic involvement, and addressing critical safety needs, we ensure that our community thrives culturally and socially. We’re honored to be considered for this month’s spotlight and to have the opportunity to share our mission with a wider audience.
