A Vision for the Arizona Borderlands

A Vision for the Arizona Borderlands

In a world where borders often signify division, the Arizona Border Alliance (ABA) is working tirelessly to turn them into bridges. Conceived in 2023 by a dedicated group of founding board members, ABA was born from a vision of collaboration, with the goals of harnessing existing resources, reducing service duplication, and closing critical gaps in support for southern Arizona’s border communities. Unlike any other agency, ABA set itself apart with a bi-national focus, seeking to serve as the go-to hub for individuals needing access to essential services on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

Officially founded on March 24, 2024, and granted its 501(c)(3) status just months later on June 4, 2024, the Alliance wasted no time in forging partnerships across a wide spectrum of agencies, stakeholders, and community advocates. The ABA’s mission is bold yet simple: to elevate the quality of life for border residents through strategic partnerships, policy advocacy, and direct community engagement.

ABA's key to success lies in its multifaceted approach to tackling the unique challenges faced by Arizona’s border region—everything from economic development and health care to cross-border relations and security. While many organizations work to address these issues, ABA’s bi-national lens and ability to collaborate seamlessly with Mexican counterparts make it a standout force for change.

Since its inception, the Alliance has garnered support from local governments, businesses, fellow nonprofits, and private donors, allowing it to quickly lay the groundwork for vital programs. Early initiatives focused on border security and economic development, but ABA’s impact has since grown to include joint efforts with Mexican organizations in areas like trade, tourism, and public health.

Leading Change Through Partnership and Innovation

At the heart of the ABA’s work is a commitment to collaboration. Recognizing that many challenges faced by border communities transcend national boundaries, the ABA has formalized partnerships with local governments, NGOs, and business associations in Mexico. These partnerships have paved the way for joint initiatives that tackle cross-border trade, promote cultural exchange, and address community health needs head-on.

As the organization looks toward the future, it remains laser-focused on key areas critical to the well-being of border communities:

  • Economic Development: Supporting small businesses, promoting cross-border trade, and advocating for infrastructure that boosts local economies.
  • Public Health and Safety: Launching health programs, emergency response initiatives, and safety measures designed to protect and empower border residents.
  • Education and Workforce Development: Offering educational opportunities and job training to help residents build sustainable careers.
  • Environmental Sustainability: Addressing environmental challenges unique to the border region through conservation efforts.

The Arizona Border Alliance is not just a service provider—it is a movement for positive change in one of the most complex regions of the world. With an eye toward growth, sustainability, and lasting impact, ABA remains deeply committed to improving the lives of all who call the border region home.

As border issues evolve, so too will the Alliance, which continues to adapt and strengthen its relationships with local, regional, and international partners. The Arizona Border Alliance is determined to foster a future where the U.S.-Mexico border region is prosperous, safe, and interconnected—a place where economic growth, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding flourish.
