Design for Deeper Learning Annual Series

For trainers in the social sector

The Design for Deeper Learning Annual Series invites learning & development experts to share ideas and insights with the people delivering learning programs within nonprofits, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies. Our goal is to elevate effective and inclusive adult learning practice in the nonprofit and public sectors so the people who work on behalf of our communities have the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to thrive, and the people served by nonprofits and the public sector live with joy and liberation. 

The Design for Deeper Learning Series is moderated by Nancy Bacon, a teacher, instructional designer, and learning strategist who has worked for over 25 years in the nonprofit sector. 

COST

$170 for the full series. Includes pre- and post-communication designed to extend learning and all tools related to each session.

$75 for individual sessions

BONUS: Design for Deeper Learning builds on the information presented through The Trainer Academy, which has trained hundreds of people over the past three years. The Trainer Academy is available on-demand at www.nonprofitlearning.center. Participants in the Design for Deeper Learning Series will receive a discount code to access The Trainer Academy at a $50 savings.

You are encouraged to register for the full series to experience the full collection of knowledge and tools; you may register for just one of the sessions if you prefer.

All sessions will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recordings and have access for 3 months. If you are unable to attend the session, we encourage you to register anyway so you receive all of the related materials. Because the sessions will be recorded, we are unable to offer refunds.

Using Stories to Expand Learning

For millennia, Native peoples have used stories to unlock learning. Stories introduce cultural humility and expose cultural biases and show us how preconceived notions influence how we learn and retain information. When we harness the power of stories in our learning and development programs, we can better understand our audience and build inclusive learning, using the Native American culture as an example.

This session will use a storytelling method to introduce how cultural considerations and lived experiences can influence how one learns. Through mini lessons and stories, we will experience a cultural way of teaching from Indigenous cultures. We will see, for example, how Native American stories often include elements of nature to teach a lesson, showing our connectedness to all things and helping in knowledge retention by relating the lesson to a visual aid.

Fawn Sanchez is Shoshone-Bannock from Fort Hall, Idaho, and is Carizzo-Comcrudo, an Indigenous tribe in Mexico. Fawnis a Learning and Development professional, having spent 11 years at Amazon managing Learning strategy across several technical programs and global organizations. Fawn currently manages learning programs on Native American cultural awareness at Tribal Tech, LLC. A diversity thought leader, Fawn previously led the Indigenous Peoples ERG at Amazon for 7 years. Fawn is an AISES Sequoyah Fellow, and a member of the Indigi-Genius AI Board of Directors, providing culturally relevant AI/ML educational programming to Native youth and educators. Fawn is a mentor and speaker with Ignite Worldwide, an organization that creates equity in STEM careers and works to bridge the digital divide and remove barriers to accessing STEM education in underserved communities. Fawn is a 3rd generation Army Veteran and served 8 years active duty in the US Army. Fawn has a BA in Journalism, an MA in Human Resource Management, an MBA, a PHR Certification, and is an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, and certified in AI for Business Essentials. Fawn lives in the Seattle area with her children Eli (7), and Isabella (16).
